Google Ads Auction Insights compares your visibility with other advertisers participating in many of the same eligible auctions. The report can help identify changes in competitive pressure, but it does not reveal competitors’ keywords, bids, budgets, profitability, or complete advertising strategy.
What metrics appear in Auction Insights?
Search campaign reporting can include impression share, overlap rate, outranking share, position-above rate, top-of-page rate, and absolute-top rate. Shopping and Performance Max views may include different metrics or scopes. Reports require a minimum level of activity, and Google notes that insights may not appear when impression share is below the required threshold.
What does overlap rate mean?
Overlap rate shows how often another advertiser received an impression when your ad also received one. A high overlap rate identifies frequent auction participation, not necessarily a direct business competitor. Companies can appear for different offers, locations, or customer intents within related auctions.
Should a business raise bids when a competitor appears?
Not automatically. First review search terms, qualified conversion performance, impression share lost to budget or rank, landing-page relevance, and customer value. Chasing a competitor can increase cost without improving profit. Use Auction Insights as context alongside business results, not as a bidding command.
How should competitive changes be monitored?
Compare consistent date ranges and segment by campaign, device, or time when enough data exists. Look for sustained shifts rather than one-day movement. Document your own budget, targeting, creative, and bidding changes because they can alter which auctions you enter and therefore which advertisers appear in the report.
